Water Directory Resources

Ohio State is an internationally recognized institution for water-related research, teaching, and outreach. Use the directories below to find faculty and staff from different departments, colleges, and cross-campus initiatives working on water-related activities. If you can’t find what you are looking for, please contact  Water@OhioState.

If you know exactly who you’re looking for, you can find their contact details using Ohio State’s Find People tool.

If you’re looking for an expert in a particular field but unsure where to find them, the Sustainability Institute (SI) directory can help you search by subject. Visit the SI Directory and try the following:

  • Search by keyword, e.g., “water,” “hydrology,” “water quality,” “environment,” and “water resources.”
  • Search by Research Program Area:
    • Healthy Air, Land and Water
    • Smart and Resilient Communities
    • Sustainable Resources
  • Search by U.N. Sustainable Development Goal:
    • Clean Water and Sanitation (Goal 6): Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
    • Life Below Water (Goal 14): Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development

If you know which department, center, or unit has the expert you’re after, one of these directories may help.

Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics Directory

  • The Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics (AEDE) provides world-class teaching, research, and outreach in applied economics, with concentrations in agricultural economics and agribusiness, environmental and resource economics, international and development economics, and regional and urban economics.

Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center Directory

  • The Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center engages in world-leading research, education, and outreach that enhance Ohio State’s programs in polar and alpine regions, cryospheric processes, reconstruction of past climates, climate variability and change, and the impacts of climate on the environment and society.

Earth Sciences Directory

  • The School of Earth Science (SES) faculty and students study the Earth’s interior and surface, its oceans, freshwaters and glaciers, its atmosphere and outer space, and their interactions with each other and the biosphere. Their work addresses the sustainable use of natural resources, the mitigation of natural and manufactured hazards, and the documentation and forecast of global change. They read Earth’s recent and ancient history in its rocks, fossils, landscapes, and gravity. They probe and characterize the Earth system using satellites, field-based studies, laboratory measurements, and numerical models. The fieldwork takes place anywhere from our backyard in Ohio to Antarctica, tropical coral reefs, and mountain peaks.

Environmental Engineering Directory

  • Members of Ohio State’s environmental engineering faculty in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geodetic Engineering (CEGE) are focused on several research areas, including optimization of advanced oxidation processes, engineered and natural photochemical transformation of pollutants, fate and transport of manufactured nanomaterials, drinking water membrane treatment, interactions between energy and environmental systems and policy, sediment remediation, mitigation of acid mine drainage, coal combustion byproduct reuse, contaminant transport in groundwater and surface water, ecological engineering mechanisms that control the interaction between the atmosphere and the land surface, 3D modeling of coastal and ocean surfaces, research on unit processes, and environmental studies on applied chemistry and biology.

Environment and Natural Resources Directory

  • The School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR) is dedicated to the use and management of natural resources in an economically efficient, environmentally compatible, and socially responsible manner. SENR faculty have expertise in aquatic and water resources, environmental and social sciences, forestry, rural sociology, soil science, and wildlife ecology.

Environmental Science Graduate Program Directory

  • The Environmental Science Graduate Program (ESGP) pursues and disseminates knowledge in environmental science, providing an interdisciplinary curriculum across physical sciences and engineering, biological sciences, and social sciences. The research by ESGP faculty and students addresses the dominant problems of the next century — ecological, economic, and political — which are those of an interconnected, interdependent world population. Environmental issues, such as degradation and resource depletion, are often the ultimate cause of economic and social unrest and the driving force behind regulatory policies.

Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology Directory

  • The Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology (EEOB) is focused on understanding fundamental processes that affect the evolution, physiology, behavior, and population biology of organisms, as well as species interactions and ecosystem function. The faculty, staff, and students focus on fundamental concepts and theory at levels of organization ranging from molecular to global.

Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering Directory

  • The Department of Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering (FABE) seeks to advance the science and application of systems of engineering food, agriculture, environment, and construction.

Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab Directory

  • Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab staff and partners work hard to preserve, protect, and understand the Lake Erie environment. Together, Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab provide the science behind informed policy and management decisions on science education, the Lake Erie ecosystem, and its economic impact on the region.

OSU Extension Directory

  • As the community-based outreach arm of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES), OSU Extension delivers knowledge from OSU to every county in Ohio. OSU Extension brings people and ideas together to help CFAES sustain life. OSU Extension works in many areas, including health and wellness, workforce development, thriving across the lifespan, sustainable food systems, engaged Ohioans, vibrant communities, and environmental quality.
